Pro Kitchen Tips
- Chill the dough before baking to help the streusel stay crumbly and crisp.
- Warm the caramel slightly before drizzling to make it easier to pour evenly over the squares.
Step 1
Preheat your oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg. Cut in the butter using a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Set aside about 1 3/4 cups of this crumb mixture. Press the rest firmly into the bottom of an ungreased 13x9-inch baking pan and bake it for 15 minutes.
Step 2
Once the crust is partially baked, spread the sliced apples evenly over it. In a small bowl, stir together the sweetened condensed milk and half a cup of caramel topping until smooth, then pour this over the apples. Add the walnuts to the reserved crumb mixture and sprinkle it over the top.
Step 3
Bake everything for another 45 to 50 minutes, or until the apples are nice and tender. Let it cool on a wire rack before serving. For an extra treat, serve warm with vanilla ice cream and drizzle the remaining caramel topping on top.
