Why This Dish Is So Special
Helpful Chef Tips
- Choose a good quality ham with some fat for extra flavor.
- Let the bake rest for a few minutes after cooking to help it set and make serving easier.
Step 1
Lightly heat your oven to 350Β°F and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat, then add the onion and cook it until itβs soft and just starting to turn translucent, about 4 minutes. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir it in, cooking for another 3 minutes. Slowly pour in the milk while whisking constantly to keep things smooth and lump-free. Keep stirring and cooking until the sauce thickens up nicely, which should take around 15 minutes.
Step 2
Once the sauce is thick, stir in the Colby-Jack cheese until it melts and the sauce starts to bubble. Take the skillet off the heat. In a big bowl, mix together the broccoli, ham, and rice. Pour the cheesy sauce over everything and give it a good stir to combine. Transfer this mixture to your prepared baking dish, then sprinkle the top with crushed crackers, sliced almonds, and crumbled bacon for some extra crunch and flavor.
Step 3
Pop it in the oven and bake uncovered for about 30 minutes, until everything is bubbly and heated through. Let it cool slightly before serving, and enjoy!
