Cooking Tips
- Let the sauce simmer gently to deepen the flavors.
- Toast the buns lightly to prevent sogginess and add a nice crunch.
Step 1
Melt some butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook it until it smells amazing, about a minute or two. Then toss in the onion, green pepper, and cilantro, stirring occasionally until the onion softens, which should take around 5 to 10 minutes.
Step 2
In a separate large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until it’s nicely browned, about 5 to 10 minutes. Drain off any excess fat. Turn the heat up a bit and mix in the brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, onion powder, Greek seasoning, hamburger seasoning, garlic powder, black pepper, smokehouse maple seasoning, smoked salt, and a pinch of nutmeg. Let it cook, stirring now and then, until it starts to bubble, which usually takes 4 to 6 minutes.
Step 3
Combine the onion and pepper mixture with the beef. Turn the heat down to low to let everything simmer gently. Pour in the barbecue sauce, ketchup, and apple cider vinegar. Give it a good stir, cover the pan, and let it simmer for about 30 minutes until the sauce thickens up nicely.
Step 4
Once it’s ready, spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto hamburger buns and dig in!
