Why This Recipe Works
Kitchen Tips
- Do not overbake; remove from the oven when edges are golden but the center is still soft.
- Let the bars cool completely before cutting to ensure clean slices.
Step 1
Heat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and greasing two 9x13-inch pans with cooking spray. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In another bowl, toss the chocolate chips with a tablespoon of flour to help keep them from sinking.
Step 2
Using an electric mixer, cream the butter and brown sugar together until smooth and fluffy, about 4 to 5 minutes. Then add the eggs, vanilla, and almond extract, mixing until everything is well combined. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed just until incorporated. Fold in the chocolate chips gently.
Step 3
Divide the batter evenly between the two pans and spread it out thinly using the back of a metal spoon — don’t worry, the bars will puff up as they bake. Pop them in the oven and bake until they turn golden brown and the edges start pulling away from the sides, around 22 to 25 minutes. Let them cool completely before slicing into squares and sharing with friends.
