Why This Dish Is So Satisfying
Pro Kitchen Tips
- Baste the ham regularly to keep it moist and flavorful.
- Let the meat rest for a few minutes before slicing to retain its juices.
Step 1
Heat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour about an inch of water into a baking dish, then place the ham in it with the flat side down. Score the top of the ham in diagonal lines to make diamond shapes, and press cloves into the points of those diamonds.
Step 2
In a bowl, mix together the pie filling, brown sugar, and mustard, mashing the strawberries a bit as you stir everything together. In a separate small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of the pineapple juice with the cornstarch until smooth, then stir that into your fruit mixture. You want it to be thick enough to spread easily.
Step 3
Spread this fruity glaze all over the ham, then pour the rest of the pineapple juice on top—just be careful not to wash away the glaze. Cover the ham loosely with foil to keep it moist, and pop it in the oven. Every now and then, baste the ham with the pan juices. Keep baking until a meat thermometer reads about 130°F (54°C), which should take around 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours.
Step 4
When the ham is almost done, move your oven rack to about 6 inches from the broiler and turn the broiler on. Secure pineapple slices to the ham with toothpicks, then broil until they’re nicely browned, which usually takes about 10 minutes.
Step 5
Once it’s out of the oven, let the ham rest for about 15 minutes before slicing, starting from the smaller end and working your way toward the center. This will help keep it juicy and delicious!
