What Makes This Dish So Tasty
Helpful Cooking Tips
- Prick the yams with a fork before baking to allow steam to escape and prevent bursting.
- For extra flavor, brush the yams with a little melted butter or coconut oil before baking.
Step 1
Place the yams in a large pot and covering them with salted water. Bring the water to a boil, then lower the heat to medium-low, cover the pot, and let the yams simmer until they’re tender—this usually takes about 20 minutes. Once they’re soft, drain the water and let the yams sit for a minute or two to steam dry.
Step 2
While the yams are cooling slightly, preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C). Then, put the yams back into the pot and mash them up with the juice until you get a smooth, creamy texture. Transfer the mashed yams into a 3-quart casserole dish, dot the top with butter, and sprinkle on some brown sugar and nuts for a little crunch and sweetness.
Step 3
Cover the dish loosely with aluminum foil and bake it in the oven for about 35 to 40 minutes, until everything is heated through and bubbling. Once it’s done, take it out and let it cool just a bit before serving. Enjoy!
