Why This Dish Is Worth Trying
Cooking Techniques
- Slice the turnips evenly so they cook through at the same rate.
- Allow the bake to rest for a few minutes before serving to let the flavors meld.
Step 1
Heat your oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C) and grease a 2-quart casserole dish so nothing sticks. Bring a pot of water to a boil, then add the turnips. Turn the heat down to low and let them simmer gently until theyβre nice and tender, which usually takes about 15 minutes. Drain the turnips well.
Step 2
Toss the cooked turnips into a large bowl. Mash them up along with the applesauce, softened butter, brown sugar, eggs, salt, pepper, and half of the bread crumbs. Once everything is mixed together, spread the turnip mixture evenly into your prepared casserole dish.
Step 3
Sprinkle the remaining bread crumbs over the top, then drizzle with melted butter to give it a nice golden finish. Pop the casserole in the oven and bake for about 30 minutes, or until itβs firm and cooked through. Let it cool just a bit before serving, and enjoy!
