Directions
Heat your oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC) and lightly grease a baking sheet. In a big bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, wheat germ, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg. Cut in the shortening until the mixture looks crumbly. Then, stir in the cranberries and orange zest. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and orange juice. Make a little well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet mixture. Mix everything until it just comes together into a dough. Turn it out onto a floured surface and knead it gently a few times so it holds together. Roll the dough out to about half an inch thick, then use a biscuit cutter to cut out circles. Arrange the scones a couple of inches apart on your baking sheet. Pop them in the oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until theyโre golden on top and bottom. Enjoy them warm!
