Why This Dish Is Amazing
Helpful Cooking Tips
- Toast the crumble topping until golden brown for extra crunch.
- Season the topping well with herbs and spices to enhance the taste.
Step 1
Warm your oven to 400Β°F (200Β°C). In a bowl, combine the flour, bread crumbs, Parmigiano-Reggiano, and five-spice powder. Then, work in 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter with your fingers until the mixture looks like little pebbles. Pop it in the fridge while you get the rest ready.
Step 2
Trim the stem off the broccoli and use a spiralizer to make ribbons from it. Chop the broccoli head into bite-sized florets.
Step 3
Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a large pan over medium heat. Toss in the onion and garlic and cook until theyβre soft and translucent, about 4 minutes. Sprinkle in the cornstarch, pepper, and nutmeg, stirring well; cook this for a few minutes until the roux starts to brown. Slowly add the milk while stirring constantly, and keep cooking until the sauce thickens, which should take another 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in 1/4 cup of Cheddar cheese, then add the broccoli and cook everything together for a couple more minutes until itβs nicely combined and thick.
Step 4
Pour the broccoli mixture into a baking dish. Sprinkle the rest of the Cheddar cheese on top, then evenly cover everything with the crumble mixture you made earlier. Turn your oven down to 350Β°F (175Β°C) and bake for about 20 minutes, until the topping is golden and the sauce is bubbling.
