Why This Recipe Is So Flavorful
Kitchen Advice
- Butter the outside of the bread evenly for a golden, crispy crust.
- Cook over medium heat to allow the cheese to melt without burning the bread.
Step 1
Spread butter on one side of each bread slice. Then, flip the slices over so the buttered sides are down. On two of the slices, layer on the apple slices, about a third of a cup of Gruyere cheese, and a light sprinkle of fresh thyme leaves. Top each with the remaining bread slices, buttered side facing up.
Step 2
Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat. Once warm, carefully place the sandwiches in the pan. Let them cook gently for about 4 to 5 minutes until the bread is toasted and the cheese starts to melt.
Step 3
Flip the sandwiches using a spatula, pressing down lightly to help everything stick together. Cook for another 3 to 4 minutes, keeping an eye on the heat so the bread gets golden but doesn’t burn before the cheese is fully melted.
Step 4
When they’re perfectly crispy and gooey, transfer the sandwiches to a plate. Slice each one diagonally and serve right away for the best taste.
