Why This Dish Is A Crowd Favorite
Chef Tips
- Be careful not to overbake to keep the bars chewy and not dry.
- Let the bars cool completely before cutting to avoid crumbling.
Step 1
Lightly heat your oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). In a large bowl, cream together the butter, vegetable shortening, brown sugar, egg, vanilla, and maple extract until everything is smooth and well combined. Then, stir in the flour and salt until it forms a dough. Press this evenly into a 10x15-inch baking dish.
Step 2
Pop the dish into the oven and bake until the crust is set and just starting to turn golden, about 15 minutes. While the crust is baking, melt the chocolate chips gently in a double boilerβkeep stirring and scraping the sides with a spatula so it doesnβt burn.
Step 3
Once the crust is out of the oven, spread the melted chocolate over the warm crust, then sprinkle the walnuts on top. Cut the bars into pieces while theyβre still warm, but let the chocolate firm up for about an hour before digging in.
